  • LEGO WALL-E NXT revised

Posted by admin on October 16th, 2009 and filed under NXT Education | 25 Comments »

Wall-E – In honor of Disney latest Pixar Movie.

NXT – The next (or just the beginning) of Lego’s programmable brick technology. Lego has done an amazing job of allowing it’s technology to be fully ‘hacked’ Hardware as much as software wise. (uses 1 rechargeable pack or 6 AA batt) .

Lego Technic – Super well engineered Lego piece that allow you to designed anything you can imagine. It evolved from stud to studless similarly like the RCX evolved into the NXT yet all of it –ALL Lego– works together from the first piece 50 years ago to the latest Bionicle set.

Power Functions (PF) – Lego latest motor system for the Technic line. (uses 6 AA batt)

HiTechnic – A Lego certified third party sensor vendor, makers of the IRlink to name just one, allows the control of PF motors via the NXT.

Mindsensors – Yet another third party sensor vendor, first to develop the NXTServo module, allow for up to 8 RC hobby servos (like Futaba’s) to be controlled via only one NXT’s sensor port. (uses 4 AA batt).

NXT-G – The software designed by Labview that ships with the retail NXT kit.
my Wall-E NXT – just one example of combining all of these technologies into one well known cinema robo-hero.

SPECS: 1 NXT with rechargable pack, 3 Servo Motors, 4 PF motors, 2 IR receiver, 1 UltraSonic sensor, 1 sound sensor, 1 IRlink, 1 NXTservo module and 1 mini RC servo, 10 AA batteries and Lego from the Bulldozer #8275 and other parts from various technic sets, topped with over 100 hours of fun.

Again THANKYOU all for your support, comments and kind words. Remember you can always eMail me for any Lego related questions.

Simple NXT program making use of the NXT Servo (Motor) Rotation Sensor. Feature the EXO-FORCE green wheels track meshing and traction provided by friction with rubber wheels, one NXT with rechargeable battery Motor on port A and Ultrasonic Sensor on port 4.

I wish the thing would be faster! but then it would not be called ’snail’

I made this as one of the robots i presented at the Montreal ToyCon 2009 and used film footage of it to practice making good movie with iMovie 09 … please stay tuned for upcoming DALEK video… cuz i filmed quite some footage of it to!!!
Meanwhile this video could be presented in a robotic classroom or NXT workshop as simple NXT-G programming exercise.

    The Scroll Challenge

Posted by admin on October 8th, 2009 and filed under nxt mayan adventure | No Comments »

My students at MUN Lifelong Learning used the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT kit to complete the Scroll Challenge from James Floyd Kelly’s book, LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT: The Mayan Adventure. The students built a simple arm and attached it to a motor on their robot. The robot then had to move in between two boxes and lift the scroll of paper off the boxes and bring it back to start.

Using a MacBook as tilting remote for LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT

Posted by admin on October 8th, 2009 and filed under NXT Education | 25 Comments »

In this video we show how to use the gravity sensor of a Apple MacBook Pro in order to remote control a LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robot. They connect via bluetooth, and the Interactive Geometry Software Cinderella.2 is used as controlling software. It reads the data from the gravity sensor of the MacBook, processes it and then controls the motors of the NXT robot accordingly.

More info about Cinderella at http://cinderella.de, contact: kortenkamp@cinderella.de. Recorded at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany.

    The Tomb Explorer

Posted by admin on October 6th, 2009 and filed under nxt mayan adventure | 3 Comments »

This is my latest NXT Lego mindstorm project. This is the first project out of the book The Mayan Adventure. There is a story that goes along with the book about a kid and his uncle exploring an ancient Mayan tomb. I will design, build, and program five robots in order to solve five puzzles that the kid and his uncle encounter.

In the beginning, the archeaologists cannot open the main door to the tomb because it is locked and protected by deadly traps. Beside the door is a small tunnel. Legend has it that the ancient Mayan king trained spider monkeys to run through the tunnel and stand on a pressure plate, allowing the door to be opened safely.

This robot was designed to navigate the monkey tunnel, using an ultrasonic sensor to determine when to turn. The robot will stand on the pressure plate at the end of the tunnel until I call it back by voice command.

The next project will involve a robot that travels across a string to drop weights that will trigger another pressure plate far below.

    The Monkey Bot

Posted by admin on October 2nd, 2009 and filed under nxt mayan adventure | 11 Comments »

This is my newest NXT Lego mindstorm project. This is the second project out of the book The Mayan Adventure ( http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-MINDSTORMS-NXT-Adventure-Technology/dp/159059763X ). There is a story that goes along with the book about a kid and his uncle exploring an ancient Mayan tomb. I will design, build, and program five robots in order to solve five puzzles that the kid and his uncle encounter.

In the beginning, the archaeologists cannot open the main door to the tomb because it is locked and protected by deadly traps. So I built the Tomb Explorer to help me. Then the door was opened and the traps were disabled. So now they are in the reception room. The door was across the other side. Now under the floor is a pressure plate. So if you just walked across the floor the door would lock and poisonous and deadly spears would fall on us and kill us all, due to the pressure plate. The only way to be safe is that there is a vine that traveled across the room. The king, when he wanted to get through without killing himself, would use a spider monkey with some pebbles in its feet dropped them on a smaller pressure plate which disabled the traps.

This robot was designed to travel across a vine with a pebble or something like that. I used a marble. Then, using the sound sensor, it will slow down when I make a noise. Then it will go forward again until I make another loud noise when it’s over the bag. Then it will stop, and then drop the marble. Then it will come back for more.

The next project will involve a robot that will go with strings trailing behind it so with mine and the robots combined strength it will pull out a basket with a key.
